CHAPTER NINE

They began the evening by cooking dinner together. Baked beans with cut-up hot dogs and canned corn might not be in Siegfried’s league, but it tasted delicious eaten in front of a blazing fire.

“Is this what it’s like when you go skiing in Lindelor?” Kim asked as they sat side-by-side on the floor. “The resort, the cabin, all that sort of thing?”

“Our facilities are fancier.” Jack leaned back against the couch. “And the mountains are higher.”

“That one you took today was high enough.” Kim set her plate aside.

He smiled. “Not nearly. You can’t pick up momentum without the distance.”

“Your cousin Angela isn’t the only daredevil in the family,” Kim observed. To picture Jack taking such chances both frightened and excited her.

Firelight cast gleaming highlights across his hair and skin, while shadows underscored his cheekbones. His green eyes took on smoky depths.

“The LeGrands have always been risk takers,” he said. “During World War II, when Zakovia joined the Axis powers, we insisted on neutrality. For a while, it appeared we might be overrun.”

Kim shuddered. “How did you escape the Nazis?”

“Lindelor is small and mountainous, hardly worth expending much trouble on,” he said. “More important, as neutrals, we were able to supply both sides with medical equipment and medicines. With bombs destroying so many facilities, both the Allies and the Axis recognized that we were more valuable left alone. Still, my country lived on a knife-edge.”

“Your family is a part of history.” The warmth of the fire, combined with weariness from the day’s exertions, made Kim’s eyelids droop.

“The LeGrands are your family, too,” the prince reminded her. Setting their dishes aside, he added, “I promised you a back rub. Lie down.”

Feeling no impulse to argue, Kim stretched out on the rug. It felt soft beneath her sweatshirt and jeans.

A moment later, Jack’s large body poised above her and his hands slid up the fabric of her top. Reaching down, he unsnapped her jeans and shifted them low on her hips.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” she murmured, unable to bestir herself. “Maybe we should just go to sleep.”

“A promise is a promise.” Reaching toward the hearth, he retrieved a small bottle he’d placed there earlier. Kim had assumed it was a kind of sauce. Pouring some into his hands, he began stroking it into her back. Cool and sleek, it emitted the scent of mountain pine.

“Is that from Lindelor?” Her head rested on her arms.

“An herbal lotion.” Her skin was practically melting beneath his touch. “It’s said to heal.”

A cure for whatever ailed her. Except that rather than soothing her, it was stimulating intense desires.

He unhooked her bra, letting it fall away as he kneaded her muscles. His hands were powerful but gentle, teasing out knots and finding the sore spots between her shoulder blades.

Instinctively, Kim tensed against the pleasure of the contact, but her resistance faded fast. When he tugged her jeans lower, Kim merged into a world of pine forests and mountains, castles and hearth fires, orchestrated by her very own prince.
